SpokeSixteen - Thoughts For The Road - Tyre Pressure

Tyre pressure when it’s damp under the wheel

It’s commonplace amongst professional riders to reduce tyre pressure in the wet.

I was reminded when re-watching an stage from the Tour de France that professional riders may drop their tyre pressure down to 80psi to get better grip on damp roads. It is very much an individual choice based on tyre size – a 23mm tyre will respond differently to a 28mm, the road surface will affect the bike’s handling and also the riders weight is a factor. Still, with all these variables, it is interesting to hear that the professionals don’t just inflate tyres until they are rock-solid before each ride.
